Why Fireworks Are So Frightening for Pets
Pets have much more sensitive hearing than humans. What sounds like a fun display to us can be absolutely terrifying for dogs and cats. The loud bangs, bright flashes, and vibrations can trigger a primal fight-or-flight response.
More pets go missing during fireworks season than at any other time of year. But with proper preparation, you can keep your pet safe and calm.
Before Fireworks Season
Update Your Pet's Tag and Microchip
Make sure your pet's ID tag information is current. If you have a QR tag, log in and verify your contact details are up to date. Check your microchip registration too — around 30% of microchipped pets have outdated contact information.
Create a Safe Space
Set up a cosy den for your pet well in advance — a room or corner where they feel secure. Use their favourite bed, blankets, and toys. Close curtains and play calming music or white noise. Let them get used to this space before the fireworks start.
Consider Calming Products
Speak to your vet about options like:
- Pheromone diffusers (Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats)
- Calming supplements
- Anxiety wraps or thunder shirts
- In severe cases, prescription medication
On the Night
- Walk dogs before dark — don't risk being out during displays
- Lock cat flaps and keep all windows and doors closed
- Keep curtains drawn and lights on to reduce flashes
- Put on the TV or music at a moderate volume
- Act normally — your pet picks up on your anxiety
- Don't force interaction — let them come to you
- Never punish a frightened pet
If Your Pet Escapes
Despite best efforts, terrified pets can find ways to escape. If your pet bolts:
- Activate "Lost Mode" on your FurTag immediately
- Alert neighbours and local community groups
- Contact your local council (for dogs) and nearby vets
- Leave your door open if safe — many pets return once the noise stops
- Put their bed or a worn item of your clothing outside — familiar scents help them navigate home
Fireworks season doesn't have to be a nightmare. With preparation and the right technology, you can keep your pet safe and enjoy the festivities yourself.
